A typical listing day: how the price and the premium moved

How it is measured

The medians of the 130 listings recorded so far (thin markets left out): what a new listing's first day usually looks like.

  2. 24h high+10.5%usually about 10 min in

  5. After 24h−0.3%94% at 2% or less

Across the 130 listings recorded so far (thin markets left out), the price rose briefly right after the listing and then fell for the whole 24 hours. The 24-hour high was typically +10.5% above the first-minute price and came about 10 min after the listing. Against the first-minute price, the typical change was −4.8% after 1 hour, −7.0% after 3 hours and −15.1% after 24 hours. After 24 hours, 105 of 130 (81%) were below their first price.

The kimchi premium moved less than the price. In the first minute it was typically +1.2%, and the highest premium in the first hour was typically +3.5%, not large. Only 34 of 116 listings saw a premium above 10% in the first hour, and the 56 that went above 4% typically fell to half of their peak within 12 min. After 24 hours the premium was typically −0.3%, almost gone.

"Typical" is the median: the middle value when the records are lined up. Price change = the price at that time ÷ the first-minute price − 1. The premium compares each listing's KRW price with the Binance USDT price × the KRW/USD rate (for coins Binance does not list, OKX → Bybit → Bitget → Gate, in that order). Calculated from the 116 listings with an overseas price.

The first 24 hours

Price change = the price at that time ÷ the first-minute price − 1, with the first minute at 0%. The line is the median, the band holds the middle half of the listings (25-75%). The first hour is drawn wider on the time axis.

By exchange

The medians of each exchange's recorded listings. Price change is against the first-minute price; the premium is against Binance (or OKX, Bybit, Bitget or Gate). With fewer than 5 records, one or two listings move the numbers a lot.

Listing-day records

How it is recorded

1Start of trading

The first minute with a trade in the exchange's public 1-minute candles is the start. A new coin in a KRW market is found within 5 minutes, and its first 24 hours are then filled in every 10 minutes.

2Korean price

The last trade of each minute in that exchange's KRW market. The first minute's last trade is the first price; the very first trade is set by a few orders placed in advance and is often far off.

3Overseas price and the rate

The Binance USDT market first, then OKX, Bybit, Bitget and Gate. If the same ticker is a different coin (a gap above 60% after 3 hours), the next exchange is used or the overseas price is left empty. The rate is the hourly KRW/USD rate.

4Premium and price change

Premium = the KRW price ÷ (the overseas USDT price × the rate) − 1; price change = the price at that time ÷ the first-minute price − 1. Each listing names its overseas exchange ("vs Binance"). Thin listings (under ₩300 million, about $210,000, in 24 hours, and similar) stay in the list but are left out of the "typical" numbers.

  • The premium right after a listing is usually large because buyers in Korea rush in while overseas supply arrives late. If deposits are closed, the gap lasts longer (wallet status).
  • A recorded first price does not mean you could have bought at it: fills jump around in the first busy minutes.
  • These are past records with no promise that the next listing will be the same. Not investment advice.

Frequently asked questions

?Why is the kimchi premium often high right after a listing?

When trading opens on a Korean exchange, buy orders rush in at once, while sellers who want to bring the coin from abroad need time to deposit and transfer it. For a few minutes to a few hours only the Korean price is pushed up, and the gap often closes quickly once overseas supply arrives.

?What is the first price?

The last trade of the first minute of trading (the close of the first 1-minute candle). The very first trade is set by a handful of orders placed in advance and can be far from the real market, so it is not used. If the first-minute price is more than twice as far as the median of the next 10 minutes, that 10-minute median is used instead.

?How is the kimchi premium calculated?

Korean exchange KRW price ÷ (overseas exchange USDT price × KRW/USD rate) − 1, the same way as the rate-based premium on the rest of the site. The overseas price is Binance first; for coins Binance does not list, the first of OKX, Bybit, Bitget and Gate that traded within 30 minutes of the listing. The exchange rate is the hourly KRW/USD rate.

?What does "typical" mean?

The median: the value in the middle when all recorded listings are lined up. An average is easily pulled by a few listings whose premium jumped by hundreds of percent, so the median shows what most listings looked like. The shaded band on the charts holds the middle half of the records (25-75%).

?What are "KRW market added" and "thin trading"?

"KRW market added" means the coin was already traded in that exchange's BTC or USDT market before its KRW market opened. "Thin trading" means less than ₩300 million (about $210,000) traded in the first 24 hours, or trades in fewer than 15 of the first 60 minutes. Such listings move on a few orders, so they stay in the list but are left out of the "typical" numbers.

?When is a record filled in?

When a new coin appears in an exchange's KRW market, its first 24 hours are filled in every 10 minutes (recording). After 24 hours the record is final. Past listings were rebuilt from the 1-minute candles the exchanges publish. These are past records with no promise that the next listing will be the same, and nothing here is investment advice.

Data: 1-minute candles of the Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone and Digital X KRW markets and the Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget and Gate USDT markets, and the hourly KRW/USD rate, from the exchanges' official public data. Stablecoin listings are left out.
