FAQ: crypto in Australia

We have gathered the most common questions so that first-time visitors can follow easily.

1

Why is the CoinSpot price shown separately?

The BTC Markets price in the table above is the midpoint between the current buy and sell prices, while the CoinSpot box shows what you pay to buy right now. Even in Australian dollars, the price depends on the exchange and the type of order, so we show them separately.

2

Do PayID deposits to BTC Markets arrive right away?

The BTC Markets Help Centre says PayID deposits are free and instant. However, your first payment may take up to 24 hours depending on your bank, and after that payments should clear within an hour, 24/7. Always include the deposit reference number BTC Markets gives you.

3

In Australia, is swapping one coin for another taxed?

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) treats swapping one crypto asset for another as a CGT event (an event where capital gains tax is worked out). The value of the coin you receive is converted to Australian dollars to work out the gain or loss.

4

Is the tax lower if I hold for more than a year?

According to the ATO, if you owned the asset for at least 12 months and are an Australian resident for tax purposes, you can reduce the capital gain by 50% (the CGT discount). The ATO notes that CGT changes announced in the 2026–27 Federal Budget do not apply to Tax Time 2026, so check the latest guidance before you lodge.

5

Is there no tax if I buy things with crypto straight away?

The ATO says a capital gain is exempt if the crypto is a personal use asset - for example, bought and used within a short time to buy things for personal use - and you acquired it for less than $10,000. But crypto held as an investment, or exchanged for Australian dollars or a gift card before spending, is usually not a personal use asset.
