The coin of the blockchain created in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and others. It can run 'smart contracts', programs that execute automatically when conditions are met, so it is the base for services such as DeFi, NFTs and stablecoins. The 2022 'Merge' upgrade replaced mining with proof of stake, where the network is run by coins that holders lock up.

Many tokens are built on Ethereum (ERC-20), so you often choose the 'Ethereum network' when depositing to or withdrawing from an exchange. When sending Ethereum, always check that the receiver supports the same network.
