Kimchi Premium Basis · How CoinGaja Calculates the Premium

CoinGaja

How CoinGaja’s kimchi premium is calculated, and which values are left out or marked separately. If the kimchi premium is new to you, read What is the kimchi premium? Meaning and calculation first.

1The basic formula

Kimchi premium (%) = Korean exchange price − overseas exchange price × KRW/USD rateOverseas exchange price × KRW/USD rate × 100

Bitcoin now (as of Oct 29 22:44 KST): Upbit ₩107,377,000, Binance $79,998.01 × ₩1,338.28 = ₩107,059,737 → premium +0.30%

  • In short: Korean price ÷ (overseas price × KRW/USD rate) − 1.
  • Korean prices are the live prices of Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone and Digital X (formerly Korbit); the overseas price is Binance’s USDT market (1 USDT = 1 USD).

2Which prices are used?

UpbitBithumbCoinoneDigital X

Korean exchange prices

The premium is calculated separately for each of the four Korean exchanges - Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone and Digital X - from their live prices.

Binance

Overseas exchange price

By default it is Binance’s USDT market, with 1 USDT counted as 1 USD. You can switch to another overseas exchange with "Base" above the table.

Why is the main premium a median?

After the premium is calculated for each of the four Korean exchanges, the median of those with fresh prices is the main premium. Unlike an average, it is not pulled away when one exchange jumps. Bitcoin’s main premium now is +0.28%.

Tether-based premium

Converted with Upbit’s tether (USDT) price in won instead of the exchange rate. It takes the dollar rate out and shows whether the coin itself is dear or cheap in Korea.

3Exchange rate

KRW/USD rate

The market rate from Yahoo Finance, checked every minute. Now ₩1,338.28.

The rate in use (Bitcoin now)

Overseas price (Binance)79,998.01 USDT
KRW/USD rate₩1,338.28
In won₩107,059,737
Upbit price₩107,377,000
Premium+0.30%
  • Bad values A rate more than 3% away from the reference rate (updated once a day) is not used.
  • No rate If no live rate arrives for over 15 minutes, the reference rate is used.
  • Weekends and holidays The currency market is closed, so the last rate stays in use.

4Which coins are covered, and which values are left out?

The top 120 coins by combined 24-hour trading value on the four Korean exchanges are covered; the list is redone every 10 minutes. Binance always comes right after the four Korean exchanges; the other overseas exchanges follow in order of CoinGecko spot volume (30-day average). The order does not change by itself when volumes change, and every table on the site uses the same order.

These values are left out or marked

Stale prices

If a Korean exchange’s or Binance’s price has not updated for over 20 seconds (45 seconds for the other overseas exchanges), no premium is shown. A Korean exchange whose prices stop for over 2 minutes is taken out of the table.

Thinly traded overseas prices

On Kraken, BTC Markets, HTX, Bitfinex, Gate and Bitget, a last trade price more than 3% away from the median of the other exchanges is treated as stale and left out of the comparison. On any overseas exchange, a price more than 25% away is not shown.

Different coins with the same symbol

When Upbit and Binance give a symbol different names and the prices are far apart (over 2 times, or over 5% from the large overseas exchanges), they are treated as different coins and not compared with Binance. E.g. Upbit AI (Gensyn) and Binance AI (Sleepless AI).

Coins with a large price step

When the price step (tick size) alone could move the premium by more than 1%p, no premium is shown.

Values that are too large

A premium beyond ±15% is treated as bad data and not shown.

Suspended deposits or withdrawals

The deposit and withdrawal status that each exchange gives is checked every 5 minutes and shown as No deposits No withdrawals No deposits/withdrawals. When transfers are blocked, the premium can widen a lot. If an exchange does not answer for over 30 minutes, the marks are taken off so they cannot be wrong.

Exchange maintenance

When a whole exchange stops, its last price is shown faded as "maintenance" (up to 12 hours) and is not used for the premium.

5How values are shown

  • Premiums are shown to two decimal places (e.g. +0.15%).
  • 24-hour change: for Upbit, the price exactly 24 hours ago is taken from Upbit’s 1-minute candles. If Upbit was under maintenance then, Bithumb’s price at the same time is used instead, and "-" is shown when the two are far apart.
  • For Bithumb, Coinone and Digital X, each exchange’s own 24-hour figure is used as it is.
  • Without a price from 24 hours ago it shows "-"; a coin listed less than 24 hours ago shows "New listing".
  • The CoinGaja Kimchi Premium Index puts the whole Korean market in one number: the premiums of the 30 coins with the most trading value on Upbit, averaged by their share of trading value.

  • Record Each coin’s premium is recorded every 5 minutes. The last 7 days stay in 5-minute steps; older records are reduced to hourly averages and kept (the originals are backed up first).
  • Restored period The year before our own record began is recalculated from the hourly Upbit and Binance closing prices and the KRW/USD rate at that hour, and drawn on the charts as a lighter line. It is based on Upbit alone, and the filters above (suspended transfers and so on) are not applied.

7When the premium is high

A high premium means coins cost more in Korea than abroad. It usually happens when:

  1. 1

    Demand rises in Korea

News or good tidings bring strong buying in Korea

  2. 2

    Overseas markets weaken

Prices fall abroad while Korean prices fall less

  3. 3

    Stronger won · weaker dollar

The KRW/USD rate falls while prices in won stay the same

For a coin with blocked transfers, the trades that bring prices together are hard, so its premium can widen a lot.

8When the premium is low

A low or negative (−) premium means coins cost less in Korea than abroad. It usually happens when:

  1. 1

    Selling rises in Korea

Fear or similar brings heavy selling in Korea

  2. 2

    Overseas markets strengthen

Prices rise abroad while Korean prices rise less

  3. 3

    Weaker won · stronger dollar

The KRW/USD rate rises while prices in won stay the same
