USDT is said to be one dollar, so why does its price keep changing?
If you look at USDT prices for the first time, you may wonder: "If 1 USDT is one dollar, why does its price move to $0.999 or $1.001?"
USDT is the best-known dollar-pegged stablecoin, designed to keep the value of 1 USDT close to one dollar. But that does not mean it always trades at exactly $1.0000 on exchanges.
USDT is also an asset bought and sold in a market
USDT, too, is traded between buyers and sellers on exchanges. When more people want to buy it at a given moment, its price can rise slightly above one dollar; when more people want to sell, it can drop slightly below.
In other words, one dollar is closer to a target reference point, and the actual market price can move around it with supply and demand.
Then why does it come back near one dollar?
When a price gap appears, market participants' trades and arbitrage can act as a force that pulls the price back near the reference point.
For example, if USDT trades meaningfully above or below one dollar in some market, trades that try to use that gap can follow. This market mechanism helps narrow the gap.
What if USDT moves far away from one dollar?
Unlike the usual small differences, if the USDT price moves far from one dollar and does not recover for a long time, the story changes. The market usually calls this de-pegging.
In such a situation, it is worth separating whether it is a simple short-term supply and demand issue, a liquidity problem on particular exchanges, or a change in the market's trust in the stablecoin itself.
USDT prices seen in Korea can be even more confusing
When you look at USDT in won on a Korean exchange, not only its dollar price but also the won–dollar exchange rate and supply and demand in the Korean market affect it.
So a Korean USDT price of ₩1,400 obviously does not mean USDT is $1,400 on the international market. It is a price converted into won, so check the exchange rate at that time as well.
What to check when you look at the USDT price
Rather than one price in won, look at the international USDT/USD price, the won–dollar exchange rate and the price gap between Korean and overseas exchanges together.
In the end, USDT is an asset designed to keep a value near one dollar, not one that trades at exactly one dollar on every exchange at every moment. Understanding this difference makes it much easier to read not only USDT prices but also the gap between Korean and overseas coin prices.
