Kimchi Premium (Kimp) in Real Trading: Practical Use and Cautions

Content

My first kimchi premium and reverse premium trades: the gap between expectation and reality, and what to watch out for

Hello. I am a user who regularly checks the kimchi premium on CoinGaja and trades in small amounts.

When I first learned about the kimchi premium, I thought, "If I buy when there is a reverse premium, send the coins abroad, and bring them back to Upbit when the kimchi premium is up, that has to be a sure win, right?" But after actually doing it a few times, I found that there are bigger traps between theory and practice than I had expected.

1. The risk of price swings during the transfer time

If the spot price itself drops 3–5% while you are sending a transfer coin (XRP, TRON and so on) to capture a 2–3% kimchi premium, you end up losing principal, let alone making a profit from the gap. The moment it turns into "kimchi premium gain < spot price swing", your nerves are badly shaken.

2. Network delays and exchange deposit and withdrawal suspensions

When the market changes abruptly or the premium widens sharply, deposit and withdrawal traffic piles up and transfers are often delayed. In bad cases, a particular exchange puts its deposits and withdrawals under maintenance, so you also have to allow for the risk of your funds being stuck for several hours.

3. The effect of exchange rate (KRW/USD) moves

If the KRW/USD exchange rate falls while your money sits in USDT on an overseas exchange, the return you expected gets cut down when you later convert back into won. You need to check not only coin prices but also the trend of the dollar exchange rate.

Conclusion and practical tips
  • Rather than getting greedy and pushing it when there is a reverse premium or the premium is near 0%, I found it safer to use the premium conservatively, to time cashing out when the kimchi premium overheats (5% or more).
  • What about the rest of you? When you trade the kimchi premium, how wide a gap (%) do you wait for before you go in?
